Congratulations to Beverly Tenorio - NM's School Counselor of the YEAR!
It has been a bit over a week now since the 2016 NMSCA Conference came to a close. The board has been busy reviewing the input that was given about the conference. Paying the bills, and reflecting on the growing edges in order to make improvements for the next conference. Overall, the feedback was VERY positive. You told us you appreciated the choice of breakout sessions, and that you ADORED the humor, wisdom, and insite provided by our Keynote, Sherene McHenry in helping you to consider ways to Revamp your Counseling Program, create stronger connections on your own campuses, and better ourcomes for your students in our current educational climate. In brief, Sherene's advice create connections, take care of yourself, don't overfunction for your students, staff, or community members, and remember to connect in with others in ways that make sense to THEM (5 love languages).
We are super thankful for all whom attended, those that volunteered their time to present, to provide support, and to assist in the planning of the days events. We are especially thankful to Charity Stolworthy our Professional Development Chair for her fearless planning and leadership.
We also heard from many of you about ongoing concerns in your areas of the state. You want to see stronger alignments in New Mexico for counselors with the ASCA model for school counselors. You have concerns about positions being taken on to fill our role on a campus by others, etc. We heard about huge caseloads, and duties being delegated to some of you which do not align to your job title. We hear what you have shared, your concerns and desires and we need your voice. Without a Legislative Liason on our board during this upcoming legislative session, we need your input even more. As the legislative session approaches, we will share ways in which you can add your voice to the conversation.
Are you looking for a smail way to contribute to the energy of NMSCA? We could use your help! We are looking for members to assist on committees, and with expanding our communication tools with members. Contact us at firstname.lastname@example.org and help us expand the school counselor story in NM.
